Introduction
“I demand a trial by combat” a fierce dialogue almost everybody has heard or read in recent times. This method of trial as showcased on the GOT is, to be honest, far from reality. Although, trials by combat did exist in the ancient period. The rules were different that I must say and a little less filmy of course. It is really complicated to understand at what geographies trial by combat existed but let’s be very clear that this was something that came from the core principle of Germanic law and later spread to the other geographies such as France, Italy, US, and even England in the Anglo-Saxon period wasn’t spared of it.
What is trial by combat
Well, if you have to understand this in the simplest way possible, Imagine the petitioner and the defendant agree to fight combat (one on one battle) regulated in front of the Judge, and whoever wins succeeds in the case. This was practiced very widely in ancient times with the belief that God is with the person who deserves justice.
